In terms of why things might have changed - if nothing has changed technically on the site, then the most likely reason is simply that one of the sequence of Google algorithm updates targeting quality has impacted the site: https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change I wouldn't spend too long trying to work out why it might have changed - and instead would put the energy into improving what you can.
