Can't diagnose this 404 error
I have a responsive menu plugin which adds an optimised menu to the site for mobile. The homepage link in this was missing the http:// and that was causing the issue. I figured that because the issue was on every page of the site it had to be something with the header or footer.

What happens to a domain in SERPs when it's set to redirect to another?
Hi there Redirecting a site depends on a few things: Is this competing brand now gone and over with? Is the old site relevant to the site you wish to redirect it to? Does it compete for the same queries you have? Does the new site have a place for old content to redirect to? If yes to all of the above, redirect it, but make sure that you follow the steps in Moz's Website Migration Guide. It will help make sure that you move the website properly and take advantage of optimization opportunities, such as URL mapping. I would also look into the Change of Address tool in Google Search Console. Also, read through Google's resources on site moves. I would perform both a content audit and backlink audit as well on the old site - what content can be updated, removed, or consolidated from the old site? What backlinks currently pointed to the competitor's website should be updated to yours, and which links could be removed & disavowed because they are spammy or irrelevant? Remember, if you inherit a website and redirect it, you don't want to inherit their spammy or toxic links, you just want the good ones! If you redirect the site and migrate it properly, the old site will fall from the SERPs, but your site should capture the vast majority of that traffic and rankings. Especially if your on-site SEO and content is as good, or better, than the old site's. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Campaigns by Subdomain
Thanks for the quick response. Great! Yep I've found that on the standard Pro account you can only track 3 competitors per campaign, hence our need to break out our categories into different campaigns. One issue I can foresee though is with our product URLs which look like this: example.com/product/title/1234567 Therefore a product in the Games category wouldn't necessarily be tracked. Is this correct? Would adding a keyword that relates to this product to the Games campaign make a difference? Thanks!

Google Books
I am not 100% (in general) sure but this recommendation in your screenshot f.ex. is closely connected with the activities of Barnes & Nobles and their listings in Google Shopping... furthermore this depends on the markup structure of the website/URL/page ... if there are good reviews Google will "link" to them...

H2s & H3s for Category Navigation
There are mixed opinions on the use of them by Google. I happen to think it's zero for all of them except H1 and I'm not convinced even of them.. There is a case for H1 tags and keywords in them but I've ranked pages without strong H1 tags too. It will depend on the design of your site but typically header tags are bold and slightly larger than the standard text on your page. You can check your websites files and change them around if you want to change the sizes. Think about reading a text book. It's nice to have the chapter titles one size, the sections another size and subsections another size. It's for your users. You want to make sure they can easily find what they want on your page. When we code sites, we generally indent too. That's not for Google, it's for us to find things faster. Same concept.

Tips for quick SEO
Your impression is right.Think about it in this way, Google wants to provide the best experience to its customer when they look for something online. If your site hasn't got any issues (technical issues), could be easily indexed by robots, has good original content and most important helps answering customers' queries, you get a step closer to the first page. Indeed link building (or earning), social media, local and whatnot do have a crucial role to improve your site authority, but without a "search engine/visitor friendly" website, all your effort won't be worth as much. Good luck Oscar
