Site structure question
Jay It does get a little insignificant if its a small site (let's say under 50 pages excluding the blog). Subfolders are a great way to categorize your content and structure the site so that users and engines can understand the relationships. This is particularly useful on a larger site, where this type of categorization is more important. I'd say, small site - not a big deal. Make them short and avoid repetitive keywords. BUT if you anticipate this growing into a larger site, you're going to want that flexibility. Thinking long term it is a little limiting to have a theme that doesn't allow for this option. -Dan

Image URL's have knocked my sub-pages down (WP)
So why can;t you put the images on the page, rather than have done it by using a gallery and linking to that? Nofollowing the links may help, but the quickest/best soloution until you find a permanenet one would be to simply undo what you did then go to webmaster tools and remove the urls form the index.

Quick Question on Redirects
If you add the redirect correctly, the old web page does not need to exist any longer. Can I simply edit the URL and create a redirect after the fact, essentially killing the old URL? Yes. Be sure to always test any redirects after they are made.

Rel canonical Issue
We tag near-duplicates in the system, so I think you've got a combination of factors: (1) There's only one post on some of the tag pages. (2) The posts don't have a lot of text, so the "snippet" duplicates about 1/3 to 1/2 of it. (3) The navigation/code is pretty heavy, compared to content. Once those tag pages have more posts/snippets, I don't think you'll see problems. Be careful, as you grow, with how many tags you create. Tag searches can start to look a bit thin, and you may want to exclude them (or some of them) from the search index down the road. For now, I think you're probably ok. Once those tags have 3-4 snippets on them, the pages should look a lot better.
