We are ignored by Google - what should we do?
Hi Matt, Thanks for your reply. I think the fact that we gained a lot of backlinks and then lost them was due to our very highly quoted and linked story in December (the Skype story, used as an example in our first post). Many websites put links to us on their front pages. Inevitably, these only stay until pushed down and off the page by newer stories. We have not create fake links anywhere. According to Google Analytics, visitors have entered our site through links on 904 websites since Dec 1. The top ones are Reddit, YCombinator, Twitter, habrahabr.ru, Facebook, TheNextWeb and Wikipedia. All very legitimate links, as far as I can understand. What do you think we should do? Why does https prevent using a link profile tool?

Why don't our English versions show up first?
I have look into few sites. For example: I have just apple.com, which is doing good in all country Like from UK you will get apple.com/uk/ page and from India you will get apple.com/in/. I am not sure, but I think its happening because by default site is redirecting to https://zh.greatfire.org/ means when I open greatfire.org I redirected to https://zh.greatfire.org/ . I am not sure regarding it....

To noindex or not to noindex
1. yes - if you no index all but 20 pages, those 20 pages would get a boost in rankings. You would end up losing the long tail searches from those other thousands of page - so you'll need to do some cost / benefit analysis on that. 2. you'll need to do a cost / benefit analysis on this one. Are most of the visitors to your site searching in Chinese or English? Are your search terms mainly in Chinese or mainly in English? Are your Chinese speaking visitors more likely to want to visit the .zh subdomain? You could publish 20 to 50 pages on each subdomain, and then focus on doing some link building. If you have strong rankings across those 40 to 100 pages, then you could start adding more pages slowly over time.

Original content, widely quoted - yet ignored by Google
Thanks very much for your reply Jerod! Google Webmaster Tools is set up and working. Some info: No detected malware 1 crawl error (I think this must have been temporary. Only reported once, and this url is not in the robots.txt now): http://greatfire.org/url/190838 URL restricted by robots.txt Dec 10, 2011 Pages crawled per day, average: 1102 Time spent downloading a page (in milliseconds), average: 2116 The robots.txt is mostly the standard one provided by Drupal. We've added "Disallow: /node/" because all interesting urls should have a more interesting alias than that. We'll look more into whether this can be the cause. Anything else that you notice?
