RE: How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
Thanks you for your response. I had thought of changing my FTP password but the hosting co's servers were down for maintenance. They blamed it all on me. I did delete the index2.asp page and all the links are broken. I had deleted pages in April when cleaning up the site & I think I deleted this then but didn't know it. I do have a restorable version and I will pursue this tomorrow as well.I will check about the malware, thx as I wouldn't know where to do that. I have been having email problems for some time. I have moz scan my site every week (started in April) and they never detected 10,000 extra pages. I suspect I deleted it in April & they got back in. Maybe I should start selling Nike? : ) IS GWT google webmaster tools?

How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
I had lost a lot of search engine rankings & it almost put me out of business. I worked a lot on the site in April and in May my sales rebounded 37%+ almost back to where they typically are. I have blamed Panda and saw another Panda update in May and my traffic is declining again. Today I happened to decide to check what pages were being indexed and I also noticed that when I published an update this morning it said the page "<cite class="_Zd">www.cheaptubes.com/index2.asp</cite>" exists on the destination server but not in current site and it asked if I wanted to delete it. I said no at the time but am going to delete it right after this question. I went to google & put "site:cheaptubes.com" into the search. My website has about 50 pages but google has "About 2,160 results" @ 10X per page. The first four pages are mostly my pages but I noticed even on the first page, 3rd result was for Nike shoes and it isn't my site. Someone has hacked my site and put up over 21,000 pages! That must be the real reason behind my website problems, right? How do I stop this from happening again? Is this having the negative effect that I fear it is?

Cannonical tag not working
I have put canonical tags on most of my pages as I'm slowly fixing the website errors that cause me to lose my rankings last July. However, when I search google for "graphene nanoplatelets" i find it shows the non canonical version. see below cut from the 2nd page of organic results.
Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs - Cheap Tubes Inc.
<cite class="_Hd">cheaptubes.com/graphene-nanoplatelets.htm</cite>High quality, low cost Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs.I know I put the canonical tag on the page, see code below. I do not see an error but I am an SEO rookie <title>Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs</title> If anyone can find an error in my canonical tag, please tell me where it is so I can fix. I know its affecting other pages as well and most should have the tag. Some non product pages don't have it yet but will as I continue fixing it.

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thx Jane- No I wasn't aware of that. I don't get it because I put canonical tags right under the Head and I used the code below to do it. I will check again but am unsure how to fix it
I don't even know how to fix coding on the Http://cheaptubes.com site. It seems like when I add content to the canonical site it updates all of them. Thx for pointing out errors, you are giving me something to fix and improve.

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thx Jane - I may not have put a canonical tag on that page yet but its the same for every page. I can't access the http://cheaptubes.com but I can access the canonical version to publish. I did put canonical tags on most of my other pages such as the SWNTs page but it still shows a non canonical version when moz crawls it. Perhaps a 301 from http://cheaptubes.com to the canonical page? I'm just not sure how to handle it.

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Hi Everyone - I'm hoping you can help me out again. I have a functional 301 on cheaptubesinc.com. that cleared about 1/2 my dup content penalty on the moz crawl this week. As you can see in the results below, I still have 57 pages with dup content according to Moz.
57 Duplicate Page Content
13 4XX (Client Error)
57 Duplicate Page TitleI checked and I think it is mostly a canonical problem. I do have Rel Canonical tags on all my pages. When I clicked on the 1st one it appears that is the case, see below
cheaptubes.com carbon nanotubes msds
http://www.cheaptubes.com/cntmaterialsafetydatasheet.htm29414872001 duplicate
cheaptubes.com carbon nanotubes msds
http://cheaptubes.com/cntmaterialsafetydatasheet.htm25My question is, do I need another 301 from http://cheaptubes.com to the canonical version? I'ld rather not since I had to fight with network solutions for a week for them to add the / after .com so my other pages would work. Is this a penalty I should still be concernedabout given that I have the rel canonical tags? Please let me know your thoughts on thisMike

RE: Renaming web pages vs new web site
Thanks for your help William. I got the old url cheaptubesinc.com 301'd to cheaptubes.com this week. Of course network solutions left off the / after .com and before the page name so that only the home page would 301 and they could try to sell me more 301s, it cost $60 for 1 and I have 48 pages on my site. I called and emailed them all week and they kept saying they had done it right and and they couldn't force google to change the links. I then realized if I typed www.cheaptubesinc/graphene.htm that it didn't work because it 301'd to www.cheaptubes.comgraphene.htm. They were argumentative with me even though I was polite with them (though I didn't want to be). I finally got a tech on the phone who said he would add the slash and ask his boss for forgiveness. However given the history of having the domain parked and pointed before and that not working over time & now this, I think my best bet is to transfer my domains to someone else. I heard bluehost is good. My concern is if they were that unethical in our dealings and the boss was argumentative in emails than they could go in an remove the slash at any time.
I also found a ton of code errors right at the top of my pages. I now know it was from putting up temporary messages but not checking to make sure the code was clean. The woman I bought my them from (6.5 years ago I paid her $60 and she still helps me for free, what difference between her & NS) notice open H1's & P elements at the top of the pages. I was still ranking well for acronyms but missing out on the long keywords since last july which caused my sales to drop off. I figure I lost at least 150K in sales because I neglected my website and didn't clean up the code on my pages a painful lesson I won't soon forget. On tuesday, when I searched single walled carbon nanotubes I had to go 8 pages back in google to find my page. By week's end I was #8 on page 1 and ahead of sigma aldrich a major materials supplier.
Thank you so much for your help William, it is sincerely appreciated

RE: How to make a .dwt in html 5
Thanks Lesley- I've managed to get the 301 done. Now I plan to resubmit my site to the major engines. Sadly, the state of my business now precludes me from hiring someone to do it for me. I am going to wordpress and already have it being installed with my hosting co so I can start on it. I bought the X theme.A few months ago I could've afforded the website to be built for me, now I can't.

How to make a .dwt in html 5
I bought a new HTML 5 theme. My website is still in frontpage and now the SE penalties are killing my business I have lost over $150K in revenues since July compared to the previous year and am going insolvent if I don't get my rankings back. So I have redo my website this week. I have tried many times to do this with many platforms (drupal, C5, joomla & others) and my brain keeps getting stuck. I think I figured out why. I am used to frontpage and the .dwt which allows me to easily create new pages from the .dwt and I know enough about SEO to do the job but I can't get out of the gate with the new themes. The .dwt worked with my brain & I am lost without it. My questions are
1-Is there a web editor I can get for HTML5 that I can create a .dwt from? The site I got the theme from also sells them for dreamweaver & expression web but I am concerned if I use those I will find myself right back where I am now, w/ an unsupported platform.
2-The other thing I am stuck on is when I open the index.html file in an editor and try to modify a page to get started, I try to preview the page and I can't see the CSS. Is that normal? My concern is spending the massive amount of time to do the work and then finding it doesn't display properly.
3-I also need the ability to 301 redirect my old pages which I can't do with frontpage, I'm at the point where i must redo the site ASAP and upload it but I can't get it started. I must rename most of my pages for SEO reasons, i used short form page titles not long form when I did it years ago. For instance, the domain is cheaptubes.com and I have a page that is cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm when it should be cheaptubes.com/single-walled-carbon-nanotubes.htm for proper SEO. I need to redo the site, rename the pages, and then 301 to the new pages. I had my hosting co do a 301 years ago from my old domain cheaptubesinc.com to the new one cheaptubes.com but a moz member correctly showed me yesterday that the 301 is no longer there. (another reason to get to a platform where I can do the 301's myself). I am getting a duplicate content penalty as the SE's see both sites with the same content. I think all of these things add up to the total devastation I am seeing with my business and I will go under soon if I can't start ranking well again. If I can get the new site up & the 301's working then I will resubmit the site to the SE's
4- do I need to 301 the old site too?

RE: Renaming web pages vs new web site
Thx William- The only way I could do it was to have the hosting co (network solutions) do it for me. The only way I can make changes to the site is with frontpage which can't do php. I called the hosting co and they did it for me. I am unsure of how to do it given my situation.

Renaming web pages vs new web site
I am struggling with renaming a lot of my web pages because I used short form acronyms vs long form keyword page names and now my pages aren't ranking where they should be and used to be. I am weighing a whole new web site or just a massive update with new page names. I also have an old domain that 301's to the new url but the old one outranks the new one. If you search google for cheap tubes the first domain you see is www.cheaptubesinc.com (the 301'd version) when the real url is www.cheaptubes.com. I know I am getting a duplicate content penalty and when moz crawls my site they see 2X the page that I really have. I tried fixing this with canonical tags but it only helped 5 pages according the moz crawls since doing them. Since last July 4th my business has been declining and I know there was an SEO algorithm update last July 4th. I think either method of renaming the web pages with better SEO for instance cheaptubes.com/single-wall-carbon-nanotubes.htm vs cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm as it is currently. In either case, it is still an HTML 2 website done on frontpage and the question I keep asking myself is if I should just scrap the whole site and start over with a more modern format. Should I try to get a new site together with good SEO and publish it quickly vs rename and 301 a bunch of pages? What about the old site? Do I need to track the old page names and 301 them to the new ones? Any help is appreciates

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thank you Oleg - I did put the tag
into the head right below the robots & google bot code on every page. I mistakenly deleted some very old non updated pages. Thx to moz, i have a list of the pages and will contact hosting co to 301 it. I think I ultimately have to 301 each page. I had moz recrawl my site last night but it said it dropped from 100 duplicate content penalties to 89, an improvement but not the one I hoped for. I did have a client tell my the site was down today, contacted network solutions and they said it was up now but they had an outage last night. Perhaps it affected the moz recrawl, but I can't know that. I also want to change the names of the pages as an interim measure before I update the site to newer format. Should I create new optimized by name pages first and then get on the phone with tech support and 301 them all to the knew pages? seems logical but so did deleting old pages until moz couldn't find them, then i realized the bots will count it against me rather than the housekeeping that it was.Mike

ok, got it, thank you so much Jane

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thx Jane
The problem is I can't simply 301 it because I'm not on apache. I can do the canonical tag. Of course I've already gone in and changed it over to the tag + refresh but server is down so it won't publish right now. I was trying to get it done ahead of moz crawling my site today. Is there a way to get moz to recrawl it after the changes are updated or do I need to wait another week?

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Hi Jane, Oleg, & Bryan
I checked with the woman who designed my theme (she is awesome). She offered the following suggestions which seem like the way to go for me. Are there any negatives that I'm not aware of with the options below?
Since you are still using FrontPage, just open your site, locate the appropriate pages, and type the following into the head area:
If you are on a Windows server, your web host can do the 301 redirect for you. You will tell them the name of the old pages and the name of the new pages and they will do the rest.
An easy alternate is for you to do the redirect yourself with an easy tag that goes into the head area of the old pages. This tag is called a redirect and redirects from the old page to the new one.
URL="http://www.newsite.com/newurl.html">
Google, Bing, and Yahoo all recognize the meta tag for the redirect and will adjust their indexing accordingly. I will usually leave an old page on the server for about 3 months to give the search engines time to catch up. Then I can delete the page.
You can, of course, get more "bang for your buck" by using both the canonical link and the meta refresh at the same time.
URL="http://www.newsite.com/newurl.html">
I like the last one, am going to try that unless you think its a flawed strategy.
Thanks for your help
