If they were done by the same designer, they likely shared the same hosting account. This is the primary reason google would associate them.

The only time that I have heard of something comparable to your situation is when a client was buying links; Google found the link buying site and penalized users that had links coming from them. Also, competitors could send bad links to your sites to make it look like you are doing black hat seo.

All of our sites have their own dedicated ip address at the hosting companies we use.

That's what I suspect...my competitors building incoming links to our site that are malicious and irrelevant. So what do I do at this point?

Seriously, I find it hard to believe that Google with all their PhDs would penalize sites for incoming links. I'm pretty sure they see the potential for abuse here. Right?
