Sounds like someone Id stay away from.
No single SEO technique withstands the test of time but there are general high level goals that you can stick with
- have a great product
- have amazing customer support
- make sure engines can access your site
- mark up your contents appropriately
- have watertight analytics
- user centered design with constant testing

I've been having some similar thoughts as the guy that you described. It's easy to get on the track where you spend 80-90% of your time trying to build links or create some funky little thing that's going to go viral. And then only 10-20% of your time is spent on creating great content.
I'm starting to rethink my SEO philosophy. While I haven't thrown SEO out the window, my philosphy is becoming one like this:
-get an idea for excellent content
-do a little bit of research to see if this is something that is going to be valuable to readers and possibly desired by other websites.
-create the content keeping in mind my desired keywords
-spend a little bit of time on promotion of my content
-move on to the next idea
Regarding link building, I don't think we can ever ignore it completely, but I think that many SEOs have gone too far in spending time trying to find tricks to get people to link to your site. The sites that are going to stand the test of time are the ones that are truly worthy of gaining links.

I am chuckling because someone gave Dunamis a thumbs down.
My opinion is exactly the same as hers.
My philosophy is..... "Great content will defeat SEO over time."
I know that makes a lot of SEOs mad. They can give me a thumbs down too.

So true. I think sometimes it's good to forget that the search engines even exist (gasp!), and build sites for our customers that they will love and promote for us. OK I'm dreaming a bit now, but I do believe we should put our customer's first and question why we are doing something for search engines that adds nothing to the customer experience.
