HTTPS Login on HTTP Site | 301 or 302 Redirect?
-
I've searched the forum on this and online and can't seem to find a definitive answer.
Some e-commerce sites that are http use a 302 redirect to the https login while other sites use a 301 redirect. I know 302 is generally not recommended but in this case it may make sense.
Can anyone advise on the correct practice?

Hi,
I tend not to use 302's for anything other than a temporary redirect - 301 is generally the one that works best for SEO because it will pass more page rank than a 302.
Moz also have a 'best practice' post on this here.

I see because of the reciprocal nature....

Shouldn't cause an issue either way. Moving from http to https is one of those edge cases. But basically, it's a login page so link equity really isn't a factor (most of those links are likely to be ignored or devalued anyway) and it's not really a reciprocal link.
My advice - don't sweat it.
