Hi, I am thinking of redirecting all mobile (iphone, cell phone, etc) to an advertiser (so completely different content than my site).

Is there any risk of getting banned from google (etc) for doing this?

(this is for an adult site)

It is safe to do from a Google perspective as long as you are redirecting all mobile traffic as you stated.

You are welcome to offer mobile.mybrand.com or mybrand.com/mobile to your mobile users, while keeping your other users at your main site. The idea would be you are trying to offer a better user experience for your mobile customers, which is great.

You can also set up in Google WMT a sitemap for your regular site, and your mobile site. This will help Google understand your site a bit better.

I'm not offering a mobile version of my site. I'm redirecting mobile traffic to a sponsor - apart from it'll still be adult it'll have no connection to my site. So a mobile sitemap wouldn't be possible either

Why would you want to do that? That is an horrible experience for the user.

I am struggling to answer your question as I try to understand the same question Richard asks...WHY?

If your site offers content that does not offer a great user experience for mobile users, the two approaches are to either optimize your site for mobile users (which is not that difficult nor expensive) or leave your site as-is and your determined users will find ways to adjust.

I can't think of a scenario where you would want to redirect your traffic to another site. I can only guess you are being compensated for the traffic and desire money. It is a bad experience for users, it's confusing, and has a high degree of risk for your site. You should not even consider that approach.

I wouldn't do it anyway... think of all that link juice, social signals, usage data, etc... that will end up getting split between domains instead of all going into one!

Not necesesarrily. If he has no suitable mobile content (for example videos that can't play on mobile devices, or pictures / sites that are many MB in size (adult content, lots of pics probably)) but the other site has - the user would profit from that.
