Just how big is stumbled upon

I have always neglected this site and its use. It files alongside digg and so on as -

"I will give it a go next week"

So I have recently spent a lot of time using this and WOW was I impressed its a great tool for -

Link building

Traffic generation.

As I am new to it are there any more experienced users that can provide some great tips for its use. The sorts of things I will figure out in 3 months time

If you have interesting content and a bit of traffic it is possible that your visitors will do all of the work that is needed.

As far as its paid discovery goes, we didn't have much success with conversions.  It's great for getting people to your site, but since people just stumble from site to site, our traffic from them had a really high bounce rate, and not very many conversions.  I believe they've come out with better targeting options since I've tried it, so I can't speak to those.

Here's a post from someone who had a spike of traffic come from StumbleUpon.  The tl;dr; the author gives there is "From this, I’d sum up that, while StumbleUpon users are just as likely to stay to read as anyone else, they will probably leave after they've read the stumbled page, and are not likely to engage further with the site."

According to this infographic here, Stumbleupon is pretty huge traffic-wise.

Also, Digg is dying a slow death.  Reddit is where it's at.

I am interested to hear if someone has really nailed it on Stumbled upon.

Example - logged into Google analytics and gone - Oh my Goodness I just got 1000 views from Stumbled upon.

Reddit's self-service ad platform is pretty easy and intuitive to use.  I like it because users can comment on your ads and you can reply, making it easy to engage with the community.

Oh my Goodness I just got 1000 views from Stumbled upon.

I get more than that every day.

The key to big traffic from stumbleupon is quality content on popular topics that people want to share with their friends. If you don't have that, forget it.

A big site with lots of that type of content will get a steady flow of small traffic into many different pages and it can quickly add up to nice traffic.

If your content gets lots of facebook action then it will probably do well on Stumbleupon.  In fact, if you have that type of site and did nothing to promote on stumble you probably have a lot of traffic from that source already.

this is what I am finding egol from my research so far. I know two guys who work on recipes who use stumbled upon to drive traffic to there pages on sites like squidoo.
