I'd suggest updating once a week with relevant content to your audience.

Though I do wonder why you put a blog on the site and what purpose it's meant to serve since you pointed out that you're running a shopping site, not a new site or blog site. (This is not to say that you can't have a blog on an e-commerce site; many companies do this successfully. Just that you took the time to point this out in your post.) Determining the purpose of the blog on your shopping site will really determine how often you should update it.

Agree with erica.. once a week is the bare minimum.  if you can twice - 3 times a week you're going to be paying dividends much quicker with more content.. think about it 1 blog a week is 52 new pages a year.. twice a week is 104.. the content adds up quickly.

that being said.. if you're going to create a blog and not update it on any level of consistency its better to avoid it all together.

it is better to have no blog than the perception of an abandoned blog.

Keep up the 4-times-per-week updates as long as you can continue to make the posts interesting and informative.  Be sure to tweet, bookmark and otherwise promote your blog posts - over time your shop will be found for all sorts of long tail search terms which should help to increase revenues.

To make your blogging activities easier I suggest you plan a few regular themes for posts - i.e. if you can write monthly posts on 4 regular topics that works out to 1 per week so you only have to think of 3 creative posts per week instead of 4.  By regular posts I mean things that keep the same theme each month and which are easy to write - e.g. things like some interesting statistics about the shop, monthly summary of your products in the news, etc.
