I've recently been really interested in the content at reddit.  I've actually gotten some good content for my facebook page and stuff to blog about by reading what is trending there.

I haven't had any success in submitting anything though.  No one votes for my stuff.  😞

I'd love any tips from those who successfully use reddit.

Reddit's tricky. It helps to be established there, have a gimmick, work within the strictly defined norms of each subreddit, and have content that causes people to want to comment. Generally on Reddit, submissions that get lots of upboats get lots of comments and vice versa.

I know that people will say that it's not cool to submit your own stuff, but I haven't actually seen anytime when that was explicitly a problem.

If you haven't already, try submitting your stuff to lesser known subreddits that have frequent activity. If people submit new things and comment daily, but there is not a torrent of new submissions every minute, you'll have a much better time of getting attention and building your credibility there...assuming your content resonates with redditors of course 😉

I usually don't submit my content however, some of my visitors will do that.  Some of my articles will get a big spike of visitors from reddit (a few thousand) but the real traffic for me is from slashdot where I have gotten a hundred thousand visitors over two or three days.  Stumbleupon is also a good traffic source for me but instead of delivering a big spike of traffic I get a steady flow of a hundred to a thousand visitors a day.

It takes a really special article or image or other type of content to get massive traffic from these sites.  Most of my content gets very little attention however a few times per year we see the slashdot effect.
