Social Bookmarking software worth it?

Hi,

I've seen several versions of "social bookmarking software" where it allows you to create profiles, bookmark (at varied times) on delicious, submit to digg, etc.

Is this something that can penalize you or is it worth it as a time-saver for posting your content to multiple places?

Are you talking about a service that automates bookmarks through fake accounts?

I don't think it would add much value, as these accounts would show little activity. Think of it like a Klout score (klout.com), if a user has no history, only a handful of bookmarks, and rarely active, it's more likely they're spam.

You'll probably get more value by finding new followers on facebook or twitter instead. I definitely wouldn't pay money for it.

I'm actually referring to a software tool like "bookmarking demon" that lets you setup your own accounts and automates the posting to your own accounts - hundreds of them on various social media and bookmarking sites.

Not fake accounts.

Whether or not you get penalised or banned from social bookmarking sites will depend on how you use the automated software.  Many social bookmarking sites state in their terms and conditions that you're not allowed to automate the submission of links.  Others don't state that, but still reserve the right to ban accounts they feel are a misuse of their service.

In terms of whether search engines will penaise your sites - I think it depends on how many other valuable incoming links you already have.  If all your links come from social bookmarking sites you're not likely to see much of a boost to SERP rankings.
