On December 30th, 2015 I decided to look at the Moz Community Rankings, I find it fun to do for time to time, and I always like to see how close I am to getting that special dinner with Rand I have heard so much about in the past.

One thing I noticed right away is that Moz ranks members just on MozPoints, and not on other factors like, how helpful they tend to be. This means had I joined in a few years earlier, I could be at the top.. or could I be???

Again, it is just something I did for fun, but I decided to look at a few additional factors to get my True MozRank 🙂

By examining just the top 50 active members I added some additional ranking factors and aggregated them to find a true Rank. The ranking factors are..

      • Moz Points Per Month (Using the users points divided by months they have been a member)
      • Thumbs Up percentage (Using the percentage of Thumbs Up they receive per point)
      • Good Answer percentage (Using the percentage of Good Answers they receive per point)
      • Endorsed Answer percentage (Using the percentage of Endorsed Answers they receive per point)

After that I gave each of the top 50 a rank in each category based on their respective scores. I then totaled the ranks, and assigned a new final rank based on the lowest totals (which means they ranked the best).
Edit (01/18/2016): With the help of Peter Nikolow I aggregated all active users as per this post.
Link to all 4291 active users ranks

      For example EGOL category ranks:

      • MozPoint Rank (1)
      • Points Per Month Rank (2)
      • Percent of Thumbs Up Rank (27)
      • Percent of Good Answers Rank (29)
      • Percent of Endorsed Answers Rank (23)

      Total = 82
      Final Rank = 5

His closest competitor RyanKent MozPoint Points rank 2

      • MozPoint Rank (2)
      • Points Per Month Rank (3)
      • Percent of Thumbs Up Rank (39)
      • Percent of Good Answers Rank (9)
      • Percent of Endorsed Answers Rank (20)

      Total = 73
      Final Rank = 2

Well it was a fun experiment for me, a couple people are out of place in the rankings based on other factors but for the most part MozPoints are pretty accurate.

You can view the spread sheet on Google Docs and play around with the data as you wish.

      Don

EDIT: After looking at the document again I noticed an error with rank assignments I have since fixed it.

Edit (01/18/2016): With the help of Peter Nikolow I aggregated all active users as per this post. Link to all 4291 active users ranks

This is pretty awesome! And i like it!

Would you like to extend this in Jan 31 this year for all members that we can see? I can make importer of their table to XML so later we can use =ImportXML. And one bad news "Only members who have logged in within the last 60 days and have 25 or more MozPoints will be shown." So there can be other "top valued" members but we can't see it because this limitation.

And also special users like "ghost in the shell" -> https://moz.com/community/users/2380

          Hi Peter,

If you want to grab all the data, sure I would make a new one with all members.

You can email me at my user name just as it appears @gmail.com

            Ok, here is document:
            https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YGkY2Yz1RefwcG4nqJ1lbnEfTghn7pRtb9di2HICiaA/edit?usp=sharing
            captured before hour.
I leave it as-is just extract username but later make regex to extract their posts and ugc posts.

This is Top 4291 as far as i see.

Here is procedure how to get it:

            1. wget https://moz.com/community/users  - i love *nix command line tools but you can use web browser and save as HTML.
            2. Open HTML for editing.
            3. Find "  var top_users =" and delete everything BEFORE it. Now document should start as "[[1,"
            4. Find "]];" and delete semicolon and everything AFTER it. Now documents should end with "]]"
            5. As you can see we have well formated JSON. Bad news - i can't import it in Sheets due bug in =ImportJSON function.
            6. Let's go in PlanB - https://json-csv.com/
            7. Copy all JSON into clipboard
            8. Paste it on json-csv.com
            9. Push button, get CSV
            10. Import CSV into Google Docs
            11. Enjoy!

Just use some of mine formulas to extract number of posts or UGC. I can make formula for extracting username too.

Hey - i just found that we can "scrape" historical MozPoints using their profile pages:
              https://moz.com/community/users/397332
if you view source this you can see "var mozpoints_data" with JSON inside.

I can scrape all historical points for Top1000 for example starting from 2015-11-01 so you can built even better sheet.

I'll run some formulas on this today and post a new link.

I edited the post to include all active users. I don't see the need to calculate inactive at this time, perhaps if we do it every 6 months or so we can catch those inactives.

                  Here is a link:

                  Nice work grabbing the data,

                        Great work guys!

Would be nice if Moz would include this info  yearly stats (https://moz.com/blog/the-best-of-2015) - activity in the Q&A section is now completely missing in this overview.

Comparing with total Moz points isn't always the best indicator:

                        • thumbs up vs total comments makes more sense than thumbs up vs total Moz points
                        • good/endorsed answers vs total questions answered (idem - don't think that this info is easy to scrape)

As measure for activity in general:

                        • PPM for the last 12 months (rather than beginning of subscription - little personal bias as I only became active last year - while I created my account in 2008)

                        Dirk

Dirk, Q&A section is missing but they (Mods + community dept + Moz staff) actively track all activity here.

Same here. I reading Moz since 2007 but, make mine account somewhere in 2011 and start contributing here in 2015. So all mine points was in last year.

I'm preparing now small script for tracking all activity in 2016 in Top 1000 users maybe

I think that PatrickDelehanty is one of the best persons to read.  I read every post of his that I see, and I read some of them twice.  If you look at Don's spreadsheet you will see that Patrick has the highest endorsement ratio.  He is earning lots of Moz points lately because he has lots of good ideas and is generous with them.

I'd like to know if there is a link that I can click and see all recent posts by a certain person.   I would like to have an easy way to read all of Patrick's posts.  And I would read MoosaHemani's posts because his ideas are simple and practical, and AlanBleiweiss because he makes me think twice, and MarieHaynes because I think that she understands Google.  There are lots of people who I read one of their posts and would like to read more.  Just tossing a few out here that come right to mind.

                              Wow, that is really cool.

I was about to mozzie off to bed and thought I would give Moz one last read and saw this.

I'm glad my little project was enjoyed by others. Big thanks to Peter Nikolow for parsing the data to ensure all active users were aggregated and ranked.

                              Cheers,

                              Don

                                Hi Dirk,

The point about PPM made me smile, the great thing and the worst thing about data is that it can be viewed so many ways. I really see your point here.

Another thing that didn't quite make sense to be is on the Thumbs % tab. I'm not really sure how somebody could have less MozPoints than thumbs up as you should receive 1 point per thumb. I guess some people could have had some thumbs down which I didn't take into account and actually increased their ranking in this category.

                                Don

Specifically, would you like to be able to easily view all questions posted by a specific person in the forum, or questions they have answered (or at least responded to)?

                                      Both would be nice.  🙂

But the one that I use the most at other forums is questions answered.  It allows me to appreciate the wisdom of people who I trust.

Being able to view questions posted by a person is valuable too.  Some members will post the same question again and again.  Sometimes the need to hear the same answer multiple times from different people.  Sometimes their questions will be attempts to manipulate and if we look back we see that it is a pattern.

                                      Thanks for asking.

Okay, to view questions answered by a person, you'll need to grab their user ID from the URL for their community profile. (For example, your user ID is 446.) Next, swap it out for the user ID in this URL: https://moz.com/community/q/users/446/answers.

To view questions posted by a person, do the same thing with this URL: https://moz.com/community/q/users/446/questions.

Voia! Does that make sense, EGOL? It's not the most elegant solution, but it's what we have (for now).

                                        Christy 🙂

Thanks for doing this & that's pretty awesome data. I think it's cool to see who the helpful members are and what they're doing to be helpful. It's interesting how the data has changed over time as well. Some of the long-term Moz users have more posts written & more blog comments but fewer Q&A. The top people from the past 12 months are practically the opposite with way more Q&A involvement (people like Patrick, etc.)
