I think that you posted a very similar question recently....

Its really hard to be kickass when you are required to keep your hands in your pockets.

If you are afraid to improve the site then competitors are going to improve their sites and eat your lunch.

I know that this isn't the answer that you wanted but sometimes a little attitude goes an awful long way when you are in a competitive industry.

That #1 ranking should be energizing not paralyzing.

When your competitor takes  that #1 ranking away from you I bet that they will not have any trouble being an aggressive webmaster.   They will yell out the office window and get right to work attacking the rest of your keywords.

        Addressing your initial question....

The primary things that support the rankings of a webpage for a specific keyword are:  title tag, anchor text on inbound links, on-page keyword use, on-page markup such as <h>etc.  If you don't change those supports your rankings will have a good chance of holding when you change the page.</h>

Make a plan for how you are going to improve the site and earn more links and then attack it.  That is how you strenghten your site and hopefully hold rankings when competitors are working to defeat you.  If you are not attacking and your competitor is attacking then your days at the top are numbered.

Provide equally valuable or more valuable content and you will retain your position. The search engines allow new content to be tested to see if it will cement.

Failure to stay up to date and relevant will give you competitor the advantage. If the railroads would have innovated and stayed relevant then you and I would be flying with Western Pacific
