How to deal with 404 errors from deleted categories?

I was reorganizing my blog and deleted several categories. Of course now Google Webmasters is coming up with a bunch of 404 errors. How do I fix this?

It has a Simple Solution.

• Use "Remove URLs" option. Once submitted, these URLs will be de-indexed shortly. Here is a helping image to reach it: http://screencast.com/t/KVYV46DYk1rg

Oh that is great. I've used it before but then I read somewhere in google tutorials that it can cause problems if you use it when it's not an emergency.
