I'm using the Yoast SEO plugin and I've never really known the correct answer to this question or which factors you should consider when choosing, but can someone give me some advice on which post types and taxonomies to exclude when generating the sitemap using this plugin. I know this is probably unique to each site, but can someone share what criteria they weigh when choosing which ones to exclude for their own site?

I run a blog and the sitemaps index the post, categories, tags and pages. Without seeing the actual site , I dont think I can offer much valuable advice , but generally speaking

With categories and tags I make sure to add a onpage description , this way they are not just a list of posts. I am also very careful when adding categories and tag , I dont want to have a lot of duplicate content around them ( I am still in the process of cleaning up the tags after I went a little wild with them )

          Hi Andrew,

The answer often comes down to duplicate content and whether or not you choose to index these post types. If the posts are unique and valuable and you want to index them, it's generally good to include them in the sitemap.

In general, most post types should are generally included in most sitemaps. On the other hand, if you have entire categories of post types that you've de-indexed, you may not want to include these.
