Google have not specified any optimum word count that an article must have. Google suggests that the article must be unique, well written, it should be original and informative. Your social media response to the article is also very important than the length of the article, article with most FB likes, G+ and Tweets would be considered to be of good quality by Google.

Kindly refer to this article by Google about quality website. It gives you important insights on what a good article must constitute.

I would ask a different question, "Why am I writing an article just for SEO?"  Search engines have cautioned against thin content written specifically for "SEO" purposes, and years ago created Panda to penalize this type of content expressly.

The better question is, what is my existing content missing?  How can I focus on content marketing? That is how do I optimize the pages I already have to be more visible, engaging and share-worthy. And, how can I market and syndicate my content in a non-spammy way?

Not knowing your website, it would be hard to determine what's missing or what could be improved.

I completely agree with you. Our goal is to become a reputable source of information within our industry. We recently created a blog that links to our website and Facebook; hopefully over time we'll get some worth-wild traffic.

We have a lot of work to do on our site in regards to content, but we're confident we're on the right track.
