We have two different homepages for our website. One is designed for daytime users (i.e. businesses), whereas the second night version is designed with home consumers in mind.

Is this hurting our SEO by having two homepage urls, instead of just building a strong presence around one?

We have set up canonical meta on each one:

      • On the night version: domain.com/indexnight.html we have a
      • On the day version: domain.com/index.html we have a

It seems to me that we should just choose one of them and set up a permanent 301 redirect from one to the other.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

How do you control which version visitor see? Are you sending PPC ads to a page based on the time of day, or are you just wondering about organic traffic?

It might be easier to give an answer if we could see the two pages you are talking about.

However, I'll ask, do other pages on your site link back to these pages? or do the subpages just link back to the index.html only?

If you can use server side programming to change the homepage, this would be better for your users and optimization.  Just be sure to expose enough content on each for Google to spider and index properly.

Yes, 301 redirect the old night home page. In fact, redirect all homepage requests to just http://www.domain.com/

The canonical link can be removed if on the domain root.
