        Hi Andy,

That's a great question. I would keep the main categories as close as possible to the root domain.

My silo structure would look something like this:

        webiste.com/washing-machines - Main category

        webiste.com/washing-machines/safety-issues  - Subcategory

        webiste.com/washing-machines/reviews - Subcategory

        webiste.com/washing-machines/spares -Subcategory

        webiste.com/washing-machines/buying - Subcategory

        Ross

Many thanks Ross. Is it okay to not have any actual articles in the main category other than a landing page acting like an index page for each of the 5 sub- categories?

            Hi Andy,

Yes, that's exactly how I would do.  I would use the main category page as an index and link internally from that page to your subcategories with the exact match anchor texts of your targeted keywords.

            Ross

Thanks Ross. One final question please? I've started re categorising.  But after creating new categories and moving a dozen articles to them I woke up this morning with a slight panic thinking will this break any links or does Wordpress manage changing categories nicely? I'd appreciate an answer before I keep on this track.

I have double checked before and after and when I move an article to a different category the original link just gets diverted to the new category so it appears as if that is okay? When you see a URL I have it set to not actually show the category in the URL, just the website name/article name

Something seems to have gone wrong. I spent all day changing categories but wordpress started acting weird. It seemed to not like  several subcategories using the exact same title i.e "Using".

I had "washing machines/using"  and "Dishwashers/using" -  but now when I click  Washing machines/using it's listing a dishwasher article at the top. When I double check the article it is definitely only categorised under Dishwashers/using. I've had to undo all my days work with a restore.

I don't know if anything just went wrong but can someone confirm if it is OK to have multiple exact same sub category names under different main categories?

                    Hi Snowdune,

Sorry to hear that. What SEO plugin are you using to rename these categories?

Thanks for replying  Ross. I did it all manually inside WordPress. I didn't even realise I could batch change categories 🙂 I literally went to every article and updated its category manually.

I did notice that when updating 1 of the articles  I lost Internet connection after I'd clicked update for about 20 seconds. I wonder if that could have caused a problem? As long as it is definitely okay to have the exact same sub category many times as long as they are under different main categories then I can start again and hope it goes a bit better this time.

I'm not sure if the slug has to be unique though?
