My company was recently acquired by a much larger one with much stronger domain authority. Can we both use cross domain rel canonical for different keywords and on different pages than each other to help each other rank for non-competing keywords?

So bigger site reposts smaller site's blog post with canonical to the original post? should be fine. try to make sure the title/heading is identical as i've seen more powerful sites outrank original sources even with a canonical url.

For most of the site content, you can improve the small site's rankings by linking to it from relevant pages on the larger website.

          Hi there,

Thanks for your response. It would actually be combination of the two. Big site posts small site's content regarding high-grade municipal bonds, let's say, and links to small site, using rel canonical pointing to small site. Then, small site posts big site's content about high-yield bonds, for example, links to big site, using rel canonical pointing to big site. These are both done on separate pages and for different keywords. Does that work without negatively affecting SEO/being seen as black hat tactic? Basically, I'm trying to get small site to rank better for "high-grade municipal bonds" and big site to rank better for "high-yield bonds."

ehh. unless reposting to the other website naturally creates more backlinks (e.g. each site has its own separate audience that would increase the total number of backlinks) keeping the articles on separate sites and interlinking with keyword anchor text is probably the better strategy.

content syndication works best when republishing to a new audience, on domains you don't already own.
