      Hello,

I work for a company (let's call it companyX) that is about to launch a new product, lets call it ProductY. www.CompanyX.com is an old domain with a good domain authority. The market in which ProductY is being launched is extremely competitive.

The marketing department want's to launch ProductY on a new website at www.ProductY.com.
My opinion is that we should instead create a subfolder with product information at www.CompanyX.com/ProductY. By doing this we could leverage on the existing domain authority of CompanyX.com

Additionally for campaigns, and in order to have a more memorable URL we could use ProductY.com with a 301 redirect to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY

What do you think is the best strategy from an SEO point of view?

      Cheers
      Luca

        Hi Luca,

in my opinion the best way to proceed is to use your old domain that has a good domain authority and create a subfolder on it, with internak link/links in the Homepage to it. A new website in a new domain will do nothing in a extremely competitive market.

I don't understand the second part of your question. A new website will stop existing if you redirect it with a 301 redirect to the folder on the old domain, and if it's new, it wont give any authority to the page of your product on the old domain.

What I could suggest you in terms of SEO, is to create that new page in the old domain and proceed with a little quality link building campaign destined to that url (quality press articles could be a good option), and probably a social media campaign also would help directly to the promotion of the product and indirectly to the SEO of the product page.

        Hope that helps 🙂

          Hi Luca,

I would go with www.CompanyX.com/ProductY and the reason is same using existing domain authority of CompanyX.com.

          Thanks

            Hi Pau,

Thanks for your answer. I will push for going with www.CompanyX.com/ProductY

The second part of my question is related to the fact that Marketing wants an product URL easy to remember, to have in campaigns and marketing material. Therefore my idea was to use an additional domain (let's say productY.com).

ProductY.com would be an empty page with just a 301 redirect to the real product page www.CompanyX.com/ProductY  This to transfer link juice to the real product page in case someone backlinks to ProductY.com

Not sure if this could help as well

              Hi Luca,

there should be no reason to link to ProductY.com if it's an empty web that you redirect to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY, unless you create those backlinks, and if you create them, better to point them directly to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY

If there is some reason why someone naturally could create backlinks to that domain that I'm missing, in that case it could help, and it would transfer link juice to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY

If your company wants to do this for marketing purposes, go ahead, it won't benefit your SEO but it won't either harm it.

              Greetings!
