Is the size of website a ranking factor?

I've heard it said that by increasing the number of pages on a website (by adding new content) that this in iself can boost a site's ranking.

Is this an old wives tale or is there a grain of truth here?

Noup, increasing the number of pages will not help you in rankings.
What WILL HELP is creating meaningful pages with onpage optimization and really good, user focused and fresh content, those pages will rank well. Hence, the overall of your site might be more visible in search engines and possible you get some links and/or mentions, so the authority and PageRank of other pages might rank better.

Its a process that includes the whose site.
