Will a comment section on my site help with seo

I have never been a fan of comment pages such as the sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/4783642/bruce-willis-appears-on-the-one-show-in-awkward-interview.html
but i was told the other day that not only is it good for the reader but it is also good for seo and increase the number of times that google would visit the page and i would like to know if that is true.
if you have added a comment section to your articles i would like to know if you have noticed any change.

Good for SEO if the site gets a lot of visitors and you get real engagement and comments. Bad if you let spammy comments slip through, also is very time consuming to sift thru all the spam that gets posted and awaiting approval.

cheers for that. i was thinking if i do go ahead, to do it where they login with their facebook account. I have used a forum posting before but as you say, it takes a lot of time going through them and getting rid of the spam

Definitely a plus if you have good engagement. One signal on quality is engagement in comments.
