Facebook retargeting: how does it work?

Facebook Exchange brings the first cookie-based retargeted ads to Facebook. Websites can retarget their visitors on Facebook.

This is said in different posts on the internet, but how does this work?

If you partner with one of these Facebook Exchange partners (for example, Adroll), you can show ads to people on Facebook who have visited specific pages on your site.  Your exchange partner will do the cookie-ing on your site in order to target the ads, and will also push the ad copy to Facebook.  So once you put their script on your pages, and you provide them with the ad copy, images, and criteria for targeting, they set up the rest!

If the people you're looking to remarket to are customers and you already have their e-mail addresses, with the custom audiences feature on Facebook, you can show ads to people by their e-mail addresses.

If you head over to adroll.com and start your trial, they should be able to help you get set up!  You'll need to put together some Facebook ad copy (an image and text), and install a script on all of your pages, and they should be able to take care of the rest.

I don't know if you heard but you can start tracking conversions on your site from Facebook within Facebook instead of tagging the crap out of it your URLs and tracking in GA. Pixel Tracking FTW!

Does anybody know if Facebook itself offers re-targeting options?

I know about AdRoll or Perfect Audience...but is there a way to re-target people who have been on your website directly from Facebook and without AdRoll or Perfect Audience or a third-party?

You cannot do this yourself through Facebook's self service platform.  You have to have a 3rd party FBX partner do it for you.

Facebook recently began their in-news-feed retargeting ads, which for us are showing much higher CTRs, and better CPAs than the right hand side ads.  If ever there was a time to start, it's now!

I'll throw another plug in for Adroll.  The account reps over there are amazing, and they do a great job of listening to my feedback and optimizing my account.  If you need a contact over there, let me know.
