        Hi Jie,

I can sympathize with you frustration. The first thing you need to realize is that Google can determine your page title and page description (meta description) to be whatever GOOGLE feels to be most relevant about your page. You can hurt this issue by populating title tags and meta descriptions that are either Spammy  or exceed the character limitations. Those character limitations (as of right now ) are:

Title Tags: Maybe 58 Characters??? (That includes punctuation and spaces) Here's a post on the topice:

When your title tag is too long, instead of simply truncating it and adding an ellipsis to the end the way they used to, Google is trying to algorithmically determine a better title for the post.

Meta Descriptions: Please, please, please use this as your Mantra "The simple explanation is usually the correct one. "My mistake in my initial round of sleuthing was that I ignored Occam's Razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. I tried shortening the title tags and it worked like gangbusters:"

        Hope that helps!

        Dana

          Hi Dana,

Thanks so much for the helpful response!

Mine was a travel site and sometime posts have to be really long title tags which is inevitable.

What i am curious about is that the main pages with the highest page authority, all their title tags are in fact not updated by google! or rather google chose to do otherwise at its own smart interpretation..

those title tags are well within the 70 /58 characters...and with very short meta description.

          • Hi Everybody. I have a large site that is made up of the main site then a large support site. The support site has a lot of overlapping content and similar titles. Would it be beneficial to separate the two? Thank you. All answers appreciated.
