Canonical Tags Vs. Pagination

Hi,
You should definitely switch those tags over to rel prev/next. These tags are designed specifically for this type of content, so there's really no reason to use another tag. By having these in place, you'll be giving Google a better picture of your site's architecture, and therefore a more accurate representation in the SERPs. You may see the subsequent pages in SERPs, but they'll show below the mother page.

Hi Logan,
Thanks for your response. Also could you you help me out with another concern:
Once the canonical tags are removed from the paginated series, it would cause the bot to crawl the entire html of all these pages, rather than only a part of it. This is because when the canonical tag was placed, it would cause the bot to crawl only a few piece of code, place prior to the placement of the canonical tag and as soon as the bot would encounter this, the bot will move to the preferred version of the page.
So do you think that removing the canonical tag would cause my crawl bandwidth to now be focused on the paginated series rather than other section of the website. And if so would be a major cause of concern in terms of crawl ability of other sections such as blog, news ,etc.
Thanks once again.

I wouldn't worry too much about your crawl budget. With a site this large, it's a very small percentage of your total pages, so the overall effect won't be that noticeable.
