Should I use the word "blog" in my sub folder as in : http://www.mybusiness.com/blog or should I use http://www.mybusiness.com/news. Is there a difference for when my site is crawled.

I understand that a blog works a little differently. Can someone explain the basics?

There is no best practice for naming conventions. What is the purpose of your blog? Will it provide more than news? If it will provide more than news, your best bet would be to name it /blog/ and then create a category /blog/news/ to handle your news content, and categorize other content in a different directory. If you only plan on using your blog to post news, it seems appropriate to use the /news/ directory.

You might also want to do some keyword discovery. Does anyone search for keywords related to your industry or products + news? Or are there more searches for your industry and products + blog? That might help you make a decision not only on what you should name the blog but on what type of content you ought to produce.

          Hi Karen,

The main concern you have is ensuring that your blog follows best practices from a technical perspective when it comes to sitemapping. You are on the right track with www.yourdomain.com/blog instead of creating a subdomain to host your blog. This will allow for optimal link juice flow.

In terms of naming conventions - you are getting into UX and as Russ has pointed out, that has to be properly applied to your audience. If you are primarily sharing news about your industry on your site, a /news/ title may be best. It may also suggest a higher degree of professionalism with regard to your audience, depending on the demographic.

If you follow these steps, you will be in great shape. As with anything, the name has to coincide with the target audience.

          Best of luck moving forward!

          Rob
