      Hi Mozzers,

My on page content comes under my H2 tag. I have a few subheadings within my content to help break it up etc and currently this is just underlined (not bold or anything) and I am wondering from an SEO perspective, should I be making these sub headings H3 tags.

Otherwise , I just have 500-750 words of content under an H2 tag which is what I am currently doing on my landing pages.

      thanks

      pete

My suggestion only do what is natural, the signals for h3 are so small that it would not be worth doing.

If however you feel that breaking the content up further with h3 tags will make the content more appealing, you may get a higher retention rate and this will lead to better rankings.

          Hi there

Is there a reason you're not using a H1 and then H2s for your subheadings? Is it a styling issue?

Let me know - usually you would use your H1 and then H2s, not H2 and then H3s.

Just a thought - good luck!

            Hi ,

These are my category landing pages. The H1 is at the top , then my products, then my content is at the bottom under the H2 - See short url link - http://goo.gl/AdgKjA

You will notice the content is broken up with a few sub headings underlined.

            Many thanks

            Pete

Headings are used to structure content.  Use them logically like you would in a word processor.  I always refer to a Wikipedia entry as a great, logical use of headings.

Search engines started using headings as a signal because, well, it makes sense. Surely they knew in the early days that often pages wouldn't be designed with a clear understanding of headers.  Then SEOs started exploiting on these headers because they knew they were signals.

That brings us to today... I believe Google is much less focused on these headings unless implemented logically. So my recommendation is to use them logically.  Don't think of them from an SEO point of view, but from a logical document flow.  The SEO will come from that.

So to answer your question, since I don't know the page, does it logically make sense to make them an H3 tag in terms of your overall document?  You might be able to answer your own question if you think I'm correct 🙂
