don't forget Majestic SEO. Each is owned by different companies and all work slightly different but essentially they all work the same and you will find most people have a preference over which they use.  I recommend you play with all three and you will find a preference but It may take a long time to list the differences & similarities.

Quick Google found this  - http://www.searchenginejournal.com/ahrefs-versus-majesticseo-the-real-test/57948/

          Hi,

They all have their own metrics/ calculations on how they see the authority of a root domain or certain page. Besides that they all have different sizes of indexes. So depending on what kind of data you would need you could chose the right data source for your purpose. Probably best would be to combine the data from multiple sources to get the best answers.

I use a combination of all three tools however for links I tend to gravitate towards

OSE & Ahrefs I have access to majesticSEO and it is a great tool however I have built processes around using the other two.

Moz OSE combined with Ahrefs or MajesticSEO is required in order to get the most important ratio in my opinion. "Unique Live Links VS Unique Live Indexed Links" The first photo shows this.

Ahrefs cost as of the time of this posting

$0 you get a very little amount of data
$79 decent but for SEO I like the USD179 plan
$179 allows you to export as a PDF incredible amounts of data ( not allowed on $79 plan)

the $499 plan I have not used so I cannot speak on it.

There are quite a few different reviews of all the different tools out there.

I would argue that Moz is a must as OSE is the one most similar to Google's Webmaster tools.

However for many jobs it is very useful to have a tool that has a larger index. (Larger is not always better)

Both Ahrefs & majesticSEO have larger link indexes however that is not always a positive.

My belief is that you must combine OSE with one of these two Ahrefs or majesticSEO

            a brief summary

            OSE

is built in to all the other tools here at Moz making it the best value by far.

It is ability to find the newest links in comparison Ahrefs ( the next closest to finding fresh links) finds links in the last seven days OSE can do it in one day or almost live.

MajesticSEO dependent on what you want to do with it gives you almost everything for

so I combined Ahrefs & OSE I know others who do the same with OSE and majesticSEO

here is a review of four tools

            http://monitorbacklinks.com/blog/seo/ahrefs-vs-majestic-vs-moz-compared-to-monitor-backlinks/

This is a summary of the differences while you may think OSE is not as capable that is not the case.

if you look at the photograph you will see an extremely important metric Livelink data that Moz OSE is capable of pulling above both MajesticSEO and Ahrefs.

This metric alone makes OSE extremely valuable and the reach of the other tools makes them very valuable as well. A combination is ideal

            Hope this helps,

            Thomas

              Well said Martin,

In my opinion OSE combined with either Ahrefs (my pick with OSE) or MajesticSEO whatever your personal choices comes down to you have to understand each company's ways of ranking sites in addition to the raw link data which is simple to understand.

Open site Explorer is very valuable because of its ability to find live links as well as similarity to what Google's Webmaster tools see. Not to mention it is a bargain.
