If a website trades internationally and simply translates its online content from English to French, German, etc how can we ensure no duplicate content penalisations and still maintain SEO performance in each territory?

Great question, don't be to worried. There's litle chance that Google wil penalize you if you translated unique content in to a new language. However there is a way to make sure you won't get into trouble later on and this will also make sure that the right language of the content is ranking in the right country; hreflang. By directing Google to another page for the same content in another language it will most likely rank that page for the content.
