Is it possible to avoid a duplicate content error without limiting a post to only one category or tag?

        Hello,

yes, it is possible. Check out rel canonical: http://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization

Regarding Wordpress, here's a good article related to canonicalization: http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/wordpress-canonicalization-guide/

Let me know if this helps!

          Hey Michael,

Have you looked into doing a noindex on your tag pages? I'd first check your analytics and see if any of those tag pages are driving traffic/conversions before going ahead and noindexing.

          Cheers!

Dylan made a good suggestion. I'd just add to make sure that if you do noindex your tag and/or category pages, do a noindex/follow. This will ensure that the bots can find your content, but you aren't competing with your own content in the search engines.

              Hi Michael

It looks like everyone here pretty much has you covered. I also wanted to point you to this resource I did for Moz on setting up WordPress for SEO: http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success

In general, I'd agree with noindexing tags. You can index categories, but this won't result in overlapping content as long as you put posts in just 2-3 categories each.
