How does Google handle URL shortening, do they pass link juice?
-
When I'm Social Book marking my websites I use a url shortening service such as bitly.com or onlywire.com. Do these services transfer link juice in the same ways as a direct link would do?

Most social bookmarking websites are "no follow" so they won't pass on link juice anyway, shorter links also provide a better user experience and click through rate.

Bit.ly uses 301 redirects which will pass 90-95% of the link juice to your URL (almost the same as a direct link). If a URL shortener uses 302 redirects then they will not pass any link juice.

Here is a post on the Seo Moz Blog a couple of weeks ago. Provides good information to understand how shortened links work with ranking. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/url-shortener-owl-li-indexed-in-google
