What are the best practices for improving follower count on twitter?

Keen to improve our follow count on Twitter but its not all about the numbers we are also interested in getting the right followers, followers that fit our customer persona...
Any tips or articles to read would be hugely appreciated!

Hi
Try this website to start off with - there is certainly lots of information on it http://socialtriggers.com/twitter-tips/
I hope that helps

Firstly, don't pay for them or do a mass 'follow the unfollow'.
Try great content, tweeting pictures, helping people out, joining conversations etc - the growth will be slower but a better quality of follower.
If your content is good, it will get re-tweeted.
Try mentioning others in tweets. If you are saying something good, chances are they will RT and your tweet will then be seen by their followers, some of who may then follow you.
Obvious one is to add your profile name on email footers etc and to link to your profile on any other social media profiles.
Take a look at top tweeters to see what sort of thing they are saying - you may be able to learn from it.
Good luck

Put in a LOT of time and effort. Listen as much as you speak. I don't mean this as an obnoxious answer but that's the only real, sure-fire way to gain a following on Twitter. Provide value in a conversational manner and you will start to see your users naturally climb.
Utilize search.twitter.com to camp on terms and subjects relevant to your industry and engage with those users. Favorite their tweets, reply to them (don't hard sell anything on first interaction) and if they seem influential in your niche, follow them.
Use followerwonk to find highly engaged members and mimic their activities, or find ways to engage with them and their followers.
Set up private lists to follow your peers and competition to see what content is providing high value and engagement.
All in all just keep at it and stay active, if people @mention you or use your brand on Twitter, do NOT ignore them, engage, engage engage, good luck!

Hi there!
I agree and also recommend Followerwonk. Rand did a Whiteboard Friday on this topic last year which you can view here: Using Followerwonk to Grow Your Twitter Account.
Good luck!
