No, it is safe.
We've used optimizely.com on very high profile SEO landing pages and there was no effect on the SEO side. Just make sure that during the split test all settings are right.
Whatever you use the best old school approach is to noindex the B version of the split test.
Cheers.

I think it's very unlikely Google would index a test variant. Although the test variations do use JavaScript to render, I think they also rely on setting cookies to be included in a test. As bots don't accept cookies, I don't think they can receive test variant pages.
Also, the guys at Optimizely are awesome, if you want you can ask them this question and they'll get back to you ASAP with a response. We've been a very happy customer of theirs for over a year now, and I've never had any problems with test variants getting indexed.

We have real problems at the moment and we think there is a chance they are related with optimizely.
What I ask myself why does optimizely not block bots from accessing the java script they use?

Can you describe the problems you're having? Are your test variants getting indexed? Google overall does not have a problem with A/B testing, they encourage it. After all, the better your site converts, the higher CPC you can tolerate from your ads, and the more money they make.
