Authorization Permission Errors

Hey Everyone,

Recently we have received a notification via Google Webmaster Tools that said:

"Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs we were blocked from crawling due to authorization permission errors."

Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the reason for this was an increase in the amount of 403 (forbidden) crawl errors that were being reported. When I looked into the links that were returning 403, they were all coming from external sites (shopping comparison sites and "link farmy" type sites) going to product pages. Has anybody encountered/fixed this problem in the past? Also, is this going to impact site performance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Hi,

Anything under Site Errors affects the site performance overall - crawling and even rankings.

However nothing within the Site Errors will affect the overall site performance in anyway. You can have millions of 400 or 500 errors within the Site errors and not even the crawl rate will be affected on a site level.

(404 and 410 dose have an effect - as those pages will be removed out of the index but only in that case)

The only down side is that the exact pages that are returning that error could be crawled less often - this is the single issue you may face.

I've seen similar cases with 403 errors due to outside sources. At the end of the day you can just ignore those with no issues - there is no point in trying to tackle those as you won't get any positive ROI out of it.
