I think you should look at doing a 301 redirect instead. You can use the canonical tag, but you should do so in cases where you intend to have different URLs for one main page (e.g. www.example.com/blue-widget.html, www.example.com/widgets/blue-widget.html). Here is a another question regarding canonicals where Ryan Kent provides a good explanation for this.

As well as adding the 301 redirect to the /index.html page you should also ensure that non www versions of your URLs are 301 redirected to your www versions. So at the moment there are 4 versions of your homepage, these are:

www.spooksevents.co.uk
www.spooksevents.co.uk/index.html spooksevents.co.uk spooksevents.co.uk/index.html

again thank you i have taken the replies on board.But how do i place a 301 on each of these or could i have my web host company do it,or is it some thing i could pay to have done

As its a server side change I'd say ask your web host company, they should be able to steer you in the right direction.
