Our Alexa Traffic is Raising. Anybody knows What cause this?

I have found Alexa to be insanely unpredictable.  One of my sites was sitting at about 250,000 at one point.  It was getting about 1000 visitors per day.  It now gets 4000-5000 visitors per day and has an Alexa ranking of 330,000.  It makes no sense.

I have heard that the stats are relatively accurate if you are within the top 100,000 but I don't know that for sure.

Alexa stats are driven by people visiting your site who have the Alexa toolbar installed.  So, I think in my case, when my site was at 250,000, I had posted some questions in some SEO forums and a bunch of SEOs (who had the toolbar installed) visited my site.  But, given that my site is not related at all to SEO, my average visitor these days is not likely to have the toolbar.

Really, IMHO the Alexa number only means something if you are trying to sell your site or get advertisers.

I totally agree with Marie,

Alexa's data is always behind almost every other provider, it's stats are highly skewed (like Marie mentioned, it only tracks traffic from visitors w/ the toolbar installed), and it's used mainly for estimating a domain's worth based on ad clicks.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Alexa has to say. Google Analytics and SEOMoz's Open Site Explorer are much more useful tools.

Alexa reminds me a lot of Nielsen's TV ratings... it gets a lot of attention, but the sample size for the data doesn't exactly yield accurate information.

Marie thank you for responding. I keep getting two sides of the story. We are trying to get our ranking under 100K but trying to find out how to do this. Are pages the answer with content BUT we can't keep adding 10 pages a day if that's what it takes - the site would be too big to manage on our current platform.

I Agree to the comments, but with my experience of my website it mainly depends on the regular visitors to your site or can say visitors who again come back to our site helps to improve alexa. I have only 100 visitors a day and still my website is in top 100K and Bounce rate should be less.

Can any one share more ways what techniques will be helpful in improving alexa ranking.

What's is your site? I get 1000 a month and I wish I could get under 100K

Yes ofcourse i am running a web hosting company in india www.dhost.com and as per my last month analytcs stats i have a visitors less the 3000 a month. T,he value alexa gives is more to the loyal visItorsto the site.
