Does not having the homepage keyword optimized impact the rest of the site adversely?

Google sais we have to treat each page uniquely.
So the keyword density, relevance etc is for each page in particular.
That being said I think the percentage which the content of 'a' page a influences page 'b' is very very small and you would not notice it.
Keep in mind that in most of the cases the home page has the highest value(authority, juice) so would be a waste not to maximise that for some good targeted keywords.
Hope it helps.

Depending on the kind of site you're building, it's common that your home page becomes the main "brand" optimised page and even without much body text, there should be more than enough on-page/off-page signals for you to rank well (unless of course you find yourself competing against someone with the same brand name in a different market!)
When thinking about choosing templates, don't just go by which ever one seems to be the most appealing. Make sure you have the purpose of the home page in mind and how it needs to channel especially "brand" aware traffic into your conversion funnel.
Choosing a theme can mean making compromised when it comes to presenting the kind of content you want/need to have on the page. Just make sure you're not compromising on the things that really matter.
Hope this helps!
