I have a site where most of the pages don't use images. i use the logo on each page as part of the header.

As the header is on each page, if i added a keyword into the alt tag, relevant to the specific page as below

      <%=variable%>

      Would that be bad SEO?

      Thanks,

      Farky

        Hi Farky

In my opinion yes, this is not optimal SEO.

Firstly, I think that the "trick" is easy for search engines to discover: the image always stays the same, so why does the alt attribute vary? Especially if this automatic replacement appears on every page it's easy to discover.

Secondly, the idea of the alt tag is related to screen readers: a screen reader reads the alt attribute to the visually impaired so that they know that is on that space on the page. So you should best describe what is on the image in the alt attribute, in order to use it correctly (which in your case would be the company name).

Instead, I would try adding images to the site that are actually relevant for your target keyword. That way, when you describe the image in the alt attribute, you will be able to naturally use your keywords.

          I would also say yes.

Alt tags should always provide more information about the image it is. See it like this: your alt tag should provide enough information to the user would, if the imagelink is broken or anything, know what the original image was all about before it became a broken link.

            Hi Phillipp

Thank you for your quick reply, yes I was targeting the keywords but relevent to the particular page theme. I didn’t want to use too many images  over the entire site as the subject matter is a lot more text based so finding images would be difficult.

But I take your piont and will give it some further thought!

            Many thanks,

            Farky
