E-commerce: product descriptions

If you use the manufacturer's description and lots of other webmasters use it too then lots of the websites that display that description will be filtered from search results.
If you want the best opportunity for visibility write a unique description.
If you update the description your rankings could change, but if you improve the description by making it unique and maintain all SEO markup then your rankings might improve.

I agree with EGOL, always write a unique description. To add to his response, I'd check my pages with copyscape every now and then. E-commerce webmasters are especially lazy, it seems, and many will copy your unique product descriptions word for word - especially if you rank well.

You should watch the webinar where Rand talks about large scale marketing tactics for ecommerce stores. He mentioned that you should always write the product descriptions, even if it's just 5 per day.
This strategy, along with adding chunks of text on category pages has proved to be extremely successful for our ecommerce clients.
Whilst the webinar is more than a year old... it was still well ahead of its time at recording
