From a pure ranking standpoint, there is no difference between a .net and .com URL. Each site can receive the same rankings based upon on and off page factors.

The primary difference is with respect to users. Any .com domain is perceived to be more credible and is more recognizable. Think of any major business name: facebook, IBM, McDonalds, HRBlock. Add a .com to the business name and you will wind up on the company's main site.

If you choose to acquire a .net site, you are guaranteed to lose a percentage of visitors who visit the .com site instead. In this case, a lot depends on the content of the .com site. If you are selling a product or service on your .net site, and someone is selling the same product or service on the .com site, the user may not even recognize they are on a different site. Even if they do realize it is a different site, the home page of your competing site may be attractive enough to grab the user's attention. "Sale today", "Free shipping", etc are all common on home pages.

It ultimately comes down to the value of your online business. If you are serious about your online presence, then paying a few thousand dollars for a .com is a drop in the bucket.

As Ryan pointed out, I would only be concerned about the browser type-in visitors. The more popular your website will get, the more # of visitors you lose to your counterpart. If you are project is serious enough and if you can afford to get the .com, I'd go for that.

            • If I have two brands and I market one in English (BrandA.com) and one in Spanish (BrandB.com), and the websites are identical but in different languages, would that have a negative impact on SEO due to duplicate content?
