  • There is no clear specific data I'm aware of on the use of 307s as compared to 301s.  Given that a 307 is a form of temporary redirect instruction, it technically "should not" pass along bad identification value.  "Should not" is the operative concept here, since search engine algorithms are imperfect and multi-faceted.

  • Rel-Canonical is a signal.  While it helps mitigate problems of duplication, it is just one signal.  If enough other overriding factors exist, Google's automated ability to "figure things out" can become weak and confused.  So for example, if all of the pages are linked to from multiple points within the site, or if any of that content is linked to from outside the site, there could be negative impact.  It's not supposed to occur, however it can due to imperfect layering of multiple algorithms. Ultimately, there may be a need to block some content more forcefully, such as via robots.txt file.  Unfortunately there's no definitive method for evaluating this specific issue in an isolated manner without serious live site testing over extended periods of time.  So my recommendation to clients is to not mess with it unless you've seen a serious drop in organic results, and only even consider testing if you can't identify other potential primary causes.

  • Hi, you have given right solutions and good stuff to read. But there are some issues in my hostings that I'm not able to solve also with this support. This is  a particular case. Don't mind and thanks for your support Bob

  • The server ip address can help with regards to country ranking. I wouldn't say it would be a massive issue as shared hosting from companies such as 1&1 you have a choice of Germany or UK and thats it (half the time not even a choice). If you can have the ip from each country it would help show that you are actually in that country but i wouldn't say Its the be all or end all it's probably more of a tip to optimise it further rather than a must. If you are that worried look at some of the websites that are ranking high for your chosen search terms and look at the IP's to see where they are hosted then you will know what you are up against. Remember a lot of large corporate companies normally won't host in the country they are targeting they will normally have their hosting in either their IT department location or with whoever their managed services company is. (normally where the head office is based)

  • Yep, my bad. Pages seem to function under their own permalink rules (not sure why, I think most people would prefer the same permalink structure for posts and pages.) Did some quick research and looks like many others have the same issue and the only solution is to try out the available plugins. You can change the .htaccess code to append .htm to the url but WP won't be able to locate the proper post unless you change the settings in the db as well (which is what I assume the plugins do).

  • Add both sites to GWT, then go to: Vanity Site > Configuration > Change of Address > Select the new domain Give it some time and G should replace the vanity url to the new domain.

  • Hi Angie, I am using Helicon ISAPI Redirect for our redirects. Here is a simple example of the redirect synatx: RewriteRule ^policies/return_policy/ /shop/returns/ [R=301,L] RewriteRule ^policies/ / [R=301,L] I would LOVE a way to save some of these incoming links: learn/tutorials/how-to-cur Thanks for the help!

  • The site is ranking well and was not affected from Penguin. However, we believe the amount of bad backlinks (ranging from hundreds to thousands) will hurt the site's ranking soon. Our client has yet to receive any manual warning from Google as well.

  • Thanks for the speedy response. I was hoping that was the answer. We have a VPS in the UK so I'll go for that. But it does lead me to a follow on question. How do you account for regional variants in search results? I understand that each variant of a search engine can use a slightly different algorithm and a local site is more likely to have local links but there does seem still to be a greater disparity of results than these things would suggest. Many thanks, Iain

  • Hi, I ended the affiliate programmes with Shopwiki, Digidrop and one or two other similar affiliates.  We saw a quick and small bounce back of some product related terms but it has take a while for the affiliates to remove our data so their listings are still dropping our of google.  It seems that for some reason the affiliates are being credited with being the owners of the content and therefore listing higher than us. Do you think this is because the feeds are uploading every night and Shopwiki etc are being spidered quicker than our site.  One solution may be a weeks delay in new products being put onto our affiliate feeds. Here is an example of where the affiliates are all listing above the link for http://www.gear-zone.co.uk https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=When+the+temperatures+drop+and+winter+training+calls+for+a+snug+hoodie%2C+you+need+look+no+further+than+this+365+Warm+2nd+Layer+from+Adidas%2C+designed+for+cold-weather+comfort&oq=When+the+temperatures+drop+and+winter+training+calls+for+a+snug+hoodie%2C+you+need+look+no+further+than+this+365+Warm+2nd+Layer+from+Adidas%2C+designed+for+cold-weather+comfort&aqs=chrome.0.57&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Please let me know what you think and how you are getting on with the issues you are experiencing.
