  • The Rel="Canonical" notice has nothing to do with changing your title tags... likely just a coincidence. Its not really an error either. All the SEOMoz crawler is doing is notifying you that the page has a canonical tag on it. Though I don't see a canonical tag on the link you posted above so I don't know why that page would have been listed unless it had one once and has since been removed.

  • Well in today realm of SEO - you are really hiring a strategist that obtains high quality backlinks instead of low quality links in mass.  You can definitely hire a company that is reputable to work on your website and provide some great value.  I don't think it would be wise to hand it off to someone who has no SEO experience and is just doing a checklist everyday.  Just my thoughts though.

  • I imagine you were looking for the answer posted by EEE3 regarding Google Analytics, but just wanted to mention that term is also common on the more technical side of web development, relating to both Flash & Javascript, and I imagine some other languages. Moreover, it refers to situations where a program on a site, or in your browser (javascript) is trying to communicate with and access data from another website / domain name. For instance, if you have a flash program on your website that accesses data (such as photos) from another website, the website hosting the actual data may need to add your website to their crossdomain.xml file.

  • thats really helpful thanks. ill have a think about the about us link. Its a design V usability issue and i cant decide in this case which should win. I like to keep things as clean as possible. content and blogs wise we have mountains to do but we are working on it and i'm in the process of recruiting bloggers and more writers but its hard to get quality writers with specialist equestrian knowledge. If you get a good writer with no horse background they stand out like a sore thumb! I plan to rewrite the about us and faqs to optimise them more effectively, this will include adding details and length. Thanks again for the advice. Been running fast into the SEO darkness and i have not been 100% sure it was in the correct direction so your comments give me a bit more confidence to keep going! thanks.

  • Just browsing the forum and noticed this thread... Looks like you've changed to WordPress, but I just wanted to post an answer should anyone else need it. Based on your description, the page title and navigation items are currently being generated from the same field (likely, the default "title" field) in the entry.  Moreover, it's certainly not unusual to want them to be different (navigation title generally much shorter). You'll want to add a new custom field specifically for the navigation title, adjust the template that generates the navigation to use this new field, and continue using the main Title field the way you wanted. Assuming you're on ExpressionEngine 2.x (released july 2010), you'll add the new field through Admin > Channel Administration > Custom Fields. To adjust the template that generates the navigation, you'll want to go to Design > Templates > Edit.  If you're familiar with HTML, you can open the Index template and drill down to wherever the navigation is likely located at.  You'll probably find an "embed" statement that references another template specifically for navigation.  Just use whatever name is in the embed statement to find the navigation template, and go back to Design > Templates > Edit to open that template up.  From there, you'll want to change the {title} tags to the name of the new navigation title field you created  - {my_new_field} . If you're on 1.x, the process is very similar, but the templates and custom fields are in a slightly different location - let me know if you need additional help. I don't work for ExpressionEngine, but I do want to mention, for whatever it's worth, that I've used most major CMSs (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc.), and stopped when I got to EE.  If you're comfortable with HTML, you'll find it's an extremely powerful CMS, especially for SEO. Should anyone need any help with ExpressionEngine, you can find a list of developers at http://www.director-ee.com, or you can always visit their forums

  • Yeah, I use iframes and if I want to be sure they are NOT indexed, I Just add a "noindex" tag. You may also want to add a "nofollow" tag to avoid spiders to follow links inside the frame. Using iframes may be a good idea to reduce the number of links on a page (Bruce Clay suggestion).

  • Hi Paul, 301'ing old urls to new urls is enough. Additionally you can add a custom 404 page for the other old urls which may be created becuase of tags, categories etc.

  • What I don't understand is that I can still see the content here: www.mydomain.se/category/subcategory and on www.mydomain.se/category/subcategory**/subcategory2/** Would this be a duplicate content issue then? For the product urls that I changed there is now a 404 on the old url, so for them I would definitely need to do a 301. Is it the same for categories though?

  • I ignore these links when I do backlink audits.  They're obviously not self made and that's what matters.

  • Hi Mike, I have been looking for the solution since  a week almost . My website http://mysay.in has over 3000 duplicate content issue and equal number of warnings and notices .. I am very new to the Moz world and SEO knowledge is close to negligible . My sit is hosted on wordpress.com as well. Now , after reading the solution I did remove the Tag cloud widget .. Will that help ?? and if you could suggest ideally how many tags for a post are optimum ? Will removing tags from previous posts and removing the Tag cloud remove these duplicate pages on its own or is there anything else I am supposed to do?? I am just confused . Please assist !! Thanks Vikash

  • I crawled your site and you have no canonical issues, Thompson is correct about the notices. Its telling you where you have the canonicals, not that they are errors, but in case they are where you did not expect them

  • Hi Paul, As Andy mentioned earlier, the complexity here comes by the fact that these IDs cannot be simply removed since they play a role in the Magento product/category system. The first step would be that you identify how these are generated to identify the best way to optimize it to become relevant or at least doesn't add more depth and complexity in the URL structure. I've seen that there's a URL rewrite area in Magento with some system configuration options that you might want to take a look here and to this in-depth guide explaining Magento URL rewrites. I've also seen that a similar question has been asked in Stackoverflow and as you can see the potential alternatives discussed here goes into Magento's system configuration. Hope this helps! Aleyda

  • Hi Rasmus, You can try what Emanuele mentioned before and if it doesn't work please let me know exactly which are the different alternatives of the URLs that you want to rewrite and the output URLs that you're looking to get so I can help you. Thanks!

  • Hi there, If it's only that URL (not a group of URLs with a pattern to follow) that you need to 301-redirect then you can directly use: RedirectMatch 301 /dynamic-url.php?id=43 http://www.yourdomain.com/static/page/url/inserted/here If this is not the situation please let me know! Thanks, Aleyda

  • You will typically get these errors when Googlebot is unable to access your site. This usually happens when your website is down for whatever reason. You might want to check your server logs or talk to your web host and see when your website was unavailable. If it is down often you may want to consider moving web hosts.

  • Yeah, it would be nice to find someone who can do both but maybe I should settle on finding a good SEO practitioner that can let me know what could be better...
