  • Unfortunately you can only get new information when the database is updated. Sorry, but we all depend on seomoz to do the datamining and give us monthly updates.

  • To add to what Wissam has said, it is always a good idea to think about the following regarding URLs. Be consistent everywhere. This includes both inbound links (which you only have so much control over) and internal links. Be sure to communicate this throughout the company as there are likely others who will be rolling out links (engineers, PR, SEM, etc.). We had a situation once where blog post links were being published both with and without the '/'. It made our reporting messy (until we 'fixed the glitch'). Decide whether to include or exclude the 'www' and permanently redirect the version you don't want to use to the version you do want to use. In making this decision, consider your current backlink profile. What do most of your links currently point to? Good luck!

  • Do you know of any resource that will support this As the linking page changes over time (# and authority of links to the page, outbound links on the page), the amount of "link juice" it passes will change also. I have read reaserch on google only passing the anchor text once , so even if you change it wont. But nothing on the passing of "link juice" over time

  • Thanks! I assumed that was the situation, but I was just curious. Hopefully I'll see the link strength a little faster than normal Thanks for the quick response.

  • I have not used it as a particular strategy; however, I believe it does because I have seen positive effects from competitors & others using it to good effect. That is how I made the inference above is from observation of others linking profile & rankings.

  • Google Webmaster Tools and Open Site Explorer rely on different data. SEOMoz has their own index of the web which they use to create the link statistics you see in Open Site Explorer. Their index is substantially smaller than Google's, but represents a significant proportion of the overall web. What really matters is proportion, though. How many root domains do you have linking vs. your competitors? You can't get that information from Google Webmaster Tools, but you can from OSE.

  • No problem, Jessica! Glad you found the information helpful. One last point. Depending on your site design, you may have an opportunity to pass some of your home page's ranking power to your most important landing pages by linking to them from the home page. For example, we have persistent links on our home page to our top 10 games, games that convert new visitors very well, and game genres. While part of this is user experience oriented, a lot of it is also to pass on the home page's ranking power to those pages we want to rank well on the SERPs. The links on your home page shouldn't be random. Think strategically about what you link to from your home page.

  • Eventually they may, especially if too many people start to exploit it. It took them over THREE years to negate the link farms. And that's the main frustration. You can stay purists and avoid any/all unnatural or black hat tactics, but in the mean time it feels like a missed opportunity too.

  • You should always link to the authorities in your niche anyway in my opinion. That shows google what network you are a part of..

  • 'Post response' deleted my answer. I'll try and remember what I said! I think Rand's WBF was focusing largely on new websites with link portfolios that consisted almost entirely of 1000s of 'dogdy links'. Provided that your website is aged (and it sounds like it definitely is) and that you have a mix of natural and 'artificial' links then you have nothing to worry about. While I don't know, I would imagine that Google takes far more kindly to image links than text links; simply because text links have much more weight and therefore more power to manipulate. Anyway, you have a totally legitimate link building strategy and I would suggest that even if your site was brand new there wouldn't be an issue.

  • Million dollar question. However, I've found (quite unsurprisingly) that text-based content is at the bottom of the pile. Imagery and videos are the best way to get people linking and talking about you. Create or embed interesting/funny/shocking video and imagery to attract links and follow it up with content for the SEs to read and appreciate! Nick
