Www and non www how to check it.......for sure. No, really, for absolutely sure!!
Hi again Robert, God of All Things Code is away from the office for a while today, so will need to wait a little longer for his input. A couple of things that happened since my last post though: Those twitching antennae just wouldn't stop nudging me to look a little further as everything I see with this site is saying "template" to me. Add to that the URL rewrites which hide the actual URL's and the broken pdf files...so i went digging a little further and ... Aha! Not a template, but a "Theme". The entire site is built in Wordpress! Now, I am pretty sure that the broken pdf's are the result of the Wordpress URL rewrites changing the directory name in combination with the hard coded links. If this is the case, then it ought to be just a matter of adding a rule to the .htaccess file to deal specifically with the pdf's. The order in which the rules appear will determine whether the issue is resolved or not. I'll let you know as soon as I've confirmed the specifics with my Boss. Hope that helps, Sha

Open Site Explorer not Seeing 301 Redirect to non-www
That sounds like a good question for the help desk, as they will want to know if there's a possible bug. Email them at help@seomoz.org with this information and they'll take a look at it.

How can someone not call B.S. on this site ranking 4th.
I have only been doing this for a few years. But i have seen this many many times.Where a relatively new site launches and suddenly its ranking high on the first page for a certain keyword .Like you said there are very low qualities across the board regarding this site. My guess is that this site will soon disappear just as quickly as it appeared and will find its real home down on page 3 or 4. Google bounce .

For multi language sites, what is best - two domains or one with both languages?
Thanks for responding Jason (your pic looks like it was taken in a rain forest). As to traffic in Spanish for our clients product/service there is enough to put up Spanish language. As I said in reply to Ryan, I am going to have one site for the main with both English and Spanish. I would ask this: you said if considerable Spanish searches you would do one English and one Spanish, why? (Just interested in the reasoning on any SEO) Frankly, I think you could be right as much as I think doing one with both languages could be right.

On a dedicated server with multiple IP addresses, how can one address group be slow/time out and all other IP addresses OK?
Agreed and thanks, unfortunately, the host provider is anything but a one man op. Its huge. Moving to a tier four farm in Nov/Dec. Major company, in house phone, email, chat support. Etc. As to Sha......I don't care if her answer came from martians, it was one of the best I have seen. (Note to moz staff......Hint, Hint)

How long until 301 passes juice to new site?
Ouch! Don't do that ... it hurts! (the kicking I mean) Just 3 things that ever present significant issues that I am aware of Most obvious is the time required to do it properly, which will depend how large the site is. If the page structure has changed significantly then you may need to point some redirects to a category page or something else relevant. I set up a simple excel file for the site with Old URL, Content, Category, Redirect URL, Redirect date and Check date. Once I've added the old URL and content info I then assign it to a category and Redirect URL, then use the list to set up the redirects. I generally spin through and do a manual check once the 301's are in place and use the check date column if there are a lot of pages and I need to come back and finish checking later. I would also add a 404 catch-all just in case - all 404's go to home page or another appropriate page to make sure no old links are lost. When choosing your redirect URL, think about the user and relevance - For example, if I click a link to buy an item which no longer exists, there is probably more chance I will look at another product if you send me to a store page full of products than send me to home. Have fun! Sha

What should I do about links coming in that are from link farm type sites?
I agree with John's assessment of the links to your site. There is nothing you can do about them and Google does not penalize you for any unpaid links that you have acquired. Also, on one of the sites we had a dmoz link and it is not showing in OSE? Linkscape only captures the top 25% of pages on the internet. The question is, how buried in the dmoz directory is that link? If you go to dmoz.org, how many clicks does it take you to land on the page with the link? What is the PA of that page? If the page is too deep or has too low of a PA then Linkscape wont see it, and Google may not either.

How do you get reviews from a local review site to show up in Places?
It is an automated process. Google uses rich snippets to collect this data. The review site need to use rich snippets to transfer. If you are looking for sites to get reviews on, check your competitors and see where their reviews are coming from. Encourage your customers to use the same review sites. Also, give your customers options on where to review you. If someone already is active in Google reviews it doesnt make sense for them to review you in Yelp, especially since yelp will probably filter their result if they sign up for an account to write one review and never come back. If it is your review site, there is a submission process. Here is some info on rich snippets and the submission process to Google. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/05/introducing-rich-snippets.html

Is there any difference in using an underscore vs. a dash in the directory portion of the url?
As far as I know underscores are not seen as separators so that means two words with an underscore between will be tagged as one word. My personal suggestion is to avoid underscores as much as possible. All separators are good beside underscores. We work a lot with hyphens and the results are good. Hope it helps !

Why is site not being indexed by Google, and not showing on a crawl test??
Site last cached 2nd March Your site is indexed. Header's returning 200 codes. Site can be crawled fine, Xenu finds about 27 pages. Lynxviewer gets through the page alright. Only thing I can think of is that robots.txt looks needlessly complicated but should be alright, I would consider stripping it all out and re-running the test, if you get the same error then it's not that, if it is then narrow down what it could be. If no joy, let me know and I'll have another look.
